Amethyst is a form of quartz which is usually purple. The color purple has long been associated with power and wealth. Amethyst was considered rare in the past, so that plus its purple color caused it to be associated with royalty or at least the privileged class.
Amethyst is the birthstone of February, and because of this is thought to be a good luck charm for those born under the sign of Aquarius and Pisces.
People who believe in the healing powers of stones associate amethyst with calming peaceful feelings, happiness and spiritual wisdom. Supposedly amethyst soothes and protects the mind, especially for those involved in constant mental activity. Many feel that it reduces negtivity and reduces anxiety.
I found it interesting to discover that amethyst is also often associated with sobriety. The Greek work for amethyst was amethystos, which translate "not drunk". Sometimes people actually had goblets made from amethyst to protect against drunkenness.
