Making Bionic Socks

So I have knit a lot of socks, and when the first pair I ever knit got a hole, I just tossed them rather than dealing with learning to darn.  Then about a month ago, my favorite socks developed a gaping hole in the heel.

They were BFF sock pattern by Cookie A, from her book knit.sock.love.  The yarn was from Neighborhood Fiber Company.  I so loved these socks I could not bear to let them go.

I searched the net for advice on fixing socks, and found this blog post by Cookie A herself.
The method involves knitting a patch onto the sock. I had already knit my remnant of the original yarn into a giant sock yarn blanket, so I just used another random bit of yarn.

Cue the Bionic Man opening music, "We can make you better than you were before!"

And here it is after the fix is done. I'll have to see how they are to wear with the patch....

1/17/2013- Edited to add- since these are my favorite socks I am linking up to Show us Your Socks over at Patchwork Times!

I have a pair that have needed darning for 2 years and I've been afraid to try it. Any suggestions?

I don't know, I would have googled "darning" had I not found the info I linked to.

Great socks, I see why they are a favorite. I have a couple pair that need repaired. Thanks for sharing that link.

Thank you for the link. I also have never darned but eventually, I will have to do it. Love that BFF pattern.

I have a pair that need darning. One of my friends Mom's actually cuts the entire foot off her socks with holes and reknits the foot - much easier than making an entire new sock. Since she lives in Canada, most her socks are knee socks too so there is the cost of the wool to consider. The re-footed socks don't have any "bumps". Just another option to consider for socks with bigger holes! Cheers! Evelyn
