I have been sewing along with the Something New Sampler - it is a blog hop around on a number of blogs. Today I worked on the machine applique block. In all of these years of sewing I have never used anything but a straight stitch for applique by machine, and I generally do my applique by hand.
Anyway, my machine has a special stitch and foot just for applique:
The edge of the foot follows the edge of the applique- it sews 3 stitches to the left, then one stitch swoops over and catches the applique. If I were making an heirloom I would want to practice a lot more with this before I did it, and also use matching thread. Since I am just playing along to get my mojo back I am not too concerned.
Here is the finished block:
I am linking up with Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

Your block looks good. I love being able to do something new too!
How clever, I will have to check my feet and see if I have one of those. Appliqué is one of my most favorite things!
Great to explore new things. Love your block!
I have found that my machine is far more capable then I have time to explore... What machine are you using? Mine doesn't have a foot like the one you have shown.
That is a beautiful block, I am ashamed to admit that I haves that foot and I never bothered to find out what it was for
